About George Mills

George may have been married before his marriage to Rebecca.

In 1661, George Mills and sons, Samuel and Zachariah, drew lots for meadows on Long Neck. [6]

About 1682, George Mills signed a deed providing for Rebecca by putting son, Samuel Mills, in charge of her care. Was she ill or was she not Samuel's mother, so Samuel was legally charged with her care.[7]

George died in Jamaica (aka Rustdorf), Long Island, New York likely 17 October 1684. [8] A tax record exist that indicates George was in Jamaica, Long Island in 1683. [9] He is given by one researcher as dying 17 October 1674.[10]

George Mills of Jamaica, Queens County, New York (also known as Rustdorp, New Netherland) was born circa 1605 in England. The 1727 obituary for his son, Samuel Mills, claims that Samuel was 95 years old and born in North America;[1] if true, this would place the family of George Mills among the earliest settlers in the colonies, by 1632. However, there is no trace of George Mills anywhere in the colonies prior to his first record as proprietor of six acres at Hempstead, Long Island, in 1654.[2]

Documented children of George Mills:[3]

Samuel Mills, m. Susannah Palmer
Zachariah Mills, m. Abigail (Messenger) Darling
Isaac Mills
Jonathan Mills, m. Martha Wood or Martha Halstead
Bethia Mills
George Mills, Zachariah Mills, and Bethia Mills and her mother (not named) all received bequests in the 1658 will of Nicholas Tanner of Rustdorp.[4]

In 1661, George Mills and sons Samuel and Zachariah drew lots for meadows on Long Neck.[5]

On 24 Mar 1681/2, George Mills signed a deed providing for wife Rebecca by putting son Samuel Mills in charge of her care, the wording of which is unusual and may indicate that Samuel had been a child of an earlier marriage.[6]

According to a 1683 tax record, George was still living in Jamaica, Long Island at that time.[7]

George died in Jamaica, Long Island, New York, after 1683. One researcher, citing old family papers no longer existing, gives the date "Oct. 17, 1694 aged 89."[8]

Disputed biographical details
George Mills' biography is subject to many theories and contradictions including questions concerning his wife and his descendants and their wives. An award-winning book by Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG, FASG, updates what is known about the life of George and his family, based upon many sources and references not previously cited.

Some online trees[9] claim that George was born in Yorkshire, England, but there is no record to validate that theory.[10]

There is no evidence that he was son of John Mills and his wife Mary Mills. Lacking evidence, they've been detached.

George Mills could not have died in 1674 as sometimes reported, given that he signed a deed in 1681/2 and was assessed taxes in 1683.

Many have assumed that the bequests in Nicholas Tanner's will indicate that George Mills' wife Rebecca was a daughter of Nicholas, "but the documents relating to Nicholas Tanner's estate do not show this clearly at all."[11] In fact, Tanner made bequests to a long list of other neighbors and associates without any apparent family relation.[12]

Other children are attributed to George Mills, but lacking evidence:

George Mills
Nicholas Mills
Susannah Mills, m. Samuel Messenger.
Nathaniel Mills
