About George William Monroe, Sr
George W. Monroe was believed to be the son of Robert and Rosannah Puckett Monroe however, the first four children were born before that marriage took place. The family left VA and moved to Grainger County, TN and then George moved on to McMinn County. On January 4, 1804 in Grainger County, TN, George married Elizabeth Peters. Children of this union include Alice Monroe Pearce, Jesse S, Rosannah, Robert, William, Nancy Monroe Wilson, Catherine Monroe Dobbs, Elizabeth Monroe McCollum, Margaret Monroe Hardin, Joseph, George Jr, Marshall, and John.
The land for the Pond Hill Cemetery was donated by George Monroe and later was taken over by the Baptist Church in Athens
George's family was located in McMinn County TN when the Civil War began in 1861. The Monroe's were farmers and slave owners like their neighbors but their sympathies were with the Union cause. Two of his sons and two of his grandsons enlisted and were enrolled in Company "C" 3rd Regiment East TN Calvary volunteers. This occurred on November 1st 1862 in Pulaski, TN. They were mustered in at Huntsville.
At the time of the enlistment, George Sr was too old to fight being almost 80. The Confederates came to his home, hung him to a limb of a tree until he told where his money was, stole and plundered and left the place practically wrecked. Had his sons been home there would have been blood shed. His two sons Joseph and George Jr, were among the casualties on the Union side. They were treated in a field hospital near Murfreesboro TN The grandson Jesse Lafayette Monroe saw both his father George Monroe Jr and his uncle Joseph Monroe buried in trenches with others
