I am looking for information regarding my Norwegian ancestry. My great-grandfather was George (Gutorm) Ness. He was born July 24, 1863 in Strand parish, near Stavanger, Norway. He left Norway and landed in New York June 29, 1882. From New York he went to LeGrand, Iowa, Ida Grove, and Scott township, Hamily county, Iowa. He married Bertha Knutson July 8, 1886, a member of the well-known Meltvedt family. My grandfather was Gerhard Ness of Marshalltown Iowa. He was married to Leona (Arney) Ness.

George Ness was born "Guttorm Engebrigtsen" on the Nes farm in Strand, Rogaland, Norway. He came to America in 1882.
He was the son of Engebrigt (or "Ingebright") Guttormsen Nes and his wife, Gunvor Thorsdatter Rodabakken.
George changed his first name when he came to America. He also took the name of the farm where he was born as a surname and added the extra "s" to since there was already a single "s" family in the area at that time as well.
He was married in the St. Petri Church in Story City, Iowa, to Bertha Knutson on July 9, 1886. They farmed in Hamilton County, Scott Township until 1929, when they sold out to their youngest son.
George died at home, and was buried in the Mamreland Cemetery in Scott Township across the road from his home.
George and Bertha had the following children: Andrew (Inga), Gerhard (Leona), Celia (Wier Egemo), Clara (Elias Hetland), Homer(Laura), Gaylord (1. Cora, 2. Harriet), Blanche ( Manley Hetland), Ruth (Charles West), Irene (b. & d. 1905), Irene (Myron Kilbourne), Sanford (Dagney).
