arrived NZ from Kent England on the Sir Edward Paget 20th Feb 1856 (Research):3 Dec 1875 Timaru Herald J. W White v. J. Pearce; claim £4 16s. Mr Hamersley appeared for defendant: W This was an account charged-by the plaintiff for advice to the defendant's wife; the following are the particulars: " January 22nd, 1875: Mr George Pearce,' to John' W. White, you and your wife. Attending Mrs Pearce at Temuka and advising her to lay an information against you with a view to have you bound over to keep the peace, 10s 6d. February 4th. Your Wife and John Simpson. Attending the Resident Magistrate's Court in three cases on behalf of Mrs Pearce, fee for tho same as agreed by her, £5 sa. February 9th. Attending Mrs Pearce and advising -her as to her 'future relations with you; and also re the maintenance of and custody of your children,--10s 6d';- total, -£6 6s. by cash from Mrs Pearce, £1 1Os; debit balance,- £4 165."-- Mr ' Hamersley : contended that the account was most-ridiculons, and hoped that the case would not be proceeded with. After mature consideration his' Worship said that he would; give his decision- in a fortnight. - : Esther Pearce'v; George Pearce, for assault. Mr White appeared for : plaintiff, and' Mr 'Hamersley for defendant. The case was 'merely a family quarrel; and the Resident Magistrate gave the parties a very deserving lecture, and in dismissing the case; ordered defendant to pay costs.
