George Prater, Esq.

George Prater lived at Latton, Wiltshire which has been in existence since before the Roman occupation of England. There are still old Roman ruins there today.

Gary Benton Prather (family historian) believes that George was the Reeve of Nunney, Somerset, working under his cousin Sir William Paulet. George later purchased the holdings of Nunney from his cousin in a tax deal, which kept the Manor of Nunney in the family. Nunney Castle was included in this transaction which was handled by a Jack Prater. We do not know how Jack is related to the family. It is possible that Jack was the nickname for John. This was a very common nickname that was used in those days. Records state that Nunney was purchased out of the estate of George's father John.

George lived during the time that King Henry the Eighth created the Church of England and discontinued recognition of the Catholic Church. This was a harsh time for the Praters as they were Catholic. The Praters were heavily taxed for their religion, but because of their high social and political connections they continued to do well. Also they were related to other noble and titled families.

George died "interstate". He was buried in his church at Latton, Wiltshire. His tomb is under the floor of the church in the seventh isle.

The name Prater was the Anglican version of the Latin word Presbyter, Presbyter, Prater, The Elder, Praetor, Praetorian was a class of people of early Roman times who were magistrates, justices, and learned men whose position was usually inherited.

• The demesne farm was held from successive earls by beneficial leases, for years on lives renewable by fines. By c. 1554 it was held by George Prater (fn. 30) and in 1567 by his son Anthony. (fn. 31) Much litigation was brought about by Anthony's extortionate activities in Stanton, as a result of which he was several times bound over at quarter sessions, (fn. 32) excommunicated, subjected to the compelling intervention in Stanton of Henry earl of Pembroke's rent collectors, and possibly imprisoned. (fn. 33) He was described in 1601 as 'a troublesome man'. (fn. 34) Anthony's occupation of the demesne is implied in 1592, (fn. 35) but by 1594 he was dead. (fn. 36) He had sons Thomas and William who surrendered the land in 1602. (fn. 37) It was then leased to Thomas Baskerville (d. 1620–1), (fn. 38) and was afterwards held by his widow Joan. (fn. 39)
