Notes

  • "Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII, vo. 10, p. 122, which contains a letter (dated 19 Feb. 1535/6) from George RALEGH to Thomas CROMWELL, regarding some income from lands he had in Ireland through this 2nd wife whom he describes as lately dead, naming her first husband as Sir Thomas FITZGARETHE, viz.:
  • "19 Feb. R. O.323. 323. George Ralegh to Cromwell.
  • I have lately lost my wife, by whom I had 60l. land in cos. Warw. and Glouc., besides 40l. yearly, payable to her out of Ireland of the gift of her first husband, Sir Thos. Fitzgarethe. These have now descended to Sir Jas. Fitzgarethe, brother and heir to Sir Thos. Geffrey. Please write to Sir Jas. that I may have the farm, during his life and mine, of these his lands in Gloucester and Warwick, of the yearly value of 60l. 4s. 3d.
  • Farnborough, 19 Feb. Signed.
  • P. 1. Add.: Secretary. Endd."
    • Note this appears to indicate that daughter Bridget may not be the daughter of Jane Connesby? but the daughter of his last wife widow Fitzgarethe

Resided at Thornborugh & Farnborough, Warwickshire, England. According to his 1546 Will, his 2nd wife, the mother of Bridget, was the widow of Sir Thomas Fitzgarethe? (not the version I read!)

Appoints John Comeley and his brother Leonard Ralegh as executors.

Peter Helion's share of the knight's fee recorded in 1303 (fn. 68) was evidently represented by 30s. rent in Westbury manor held by Walter Helion at his death c. 1342. Walter also held from the lords of the various divisions of Westbury manor an estate which was later known as the manor of LEY, and from the 16th century as the manor of NETHERLEY; Walter's heirs were Rose, the wife of John Raleigh, her sister Eva, and John, son of a third sister, Maud Helion. (fn. 69) John was perhaps the John Coof who held the estate in 1358 when it was taken by the Crown because of his lunacy; (fn. 70) he died c. 1362 and the estate was assigned soon afterwards to his cousin and heir Thomas Raleigh. (fn. 71) William son of Thomas Raleigh held the estate at his death in 1419 when his heir was his sister

Joan, the wife of Gerard Braybrook. (fn. 72)

George Raleigh held the estate at his death in 1546, having devised it for life to his brother Leonard; Simon Raleigh, George's son, (fn. 73) held it in 1579.

Visitation of Warwickshire 1619 shows that George Raleigh married three times.
1. Jane Coningsby dau of Wm of Aldenham knt. (Frances ux Rich Verney, Edward ob s.p, George ob s.p, Humphrey ob s.p, Thomas 2 sons, Sibilla 2 daus Albon Butler, Johanna, Symon marr Anne dau Martin Docwra
2. Widow of Fitz Gerrard. (Briget marr Wm Kingsmill)
3. Anne dau of .... Ernley (Johannes supstes 1565)

This seems to indicate that mother of Bridget Raleigh must be widow of Sir Thomas Fitzgarethe.
