Among the early inhabitants of Watertown, MA were two men named John
Richardson and George Richardson.Richardson was an uncommon name at that time and they were probably brothers but there is no direct proof of this.George Richardson, age thirty, left London on the ship the Susan and Ellen on April 15, 1635 and arrived in July 1635.There is no record of the voyage of John Richardson to New England but it has been postulated that he was the eighteen year old John Richardson who left London in July 1635 on the Assurance travelling to Virginia. Starting 1634, the King of England tried to discourage migration to New England by requiring the purchase of a license. In response, many passengers embarked originally for Virginia, when New England was their ultimate destination.
John Richardson and George Richardson are both listed in the Watertown records in 1636.John Richardson was granted one acre of land in 1636-7 in the Beaver Brook Plowlands (present town of Waltham). His property was bounded on the south by the Charles River.George Richardson was granted twenty-five acres in the Great Dividends., an area in the north part of what is now Waltham and bordering on the present town of Lexington, then known as "Cambridge Farms."There is no mention of John Richardson in the carefully kept Watertown tax lists after 1637.Based on his subsequent migration to Exeter, NH and Wells, ME, we can assume that John Richardson was a follower of Rev. John Wheelwright.
