About George Shugart
George Shugart was born in North Carolina, where he was married to Mary Davis; and in 1811, came to Indiana, and settled on the quarter section on which the town of Newport now stands. As were most of the early settlers in this township, he was a member of the society of Friends. He lived many years where he first settled, and removed to Grant County, where he died. He had nine children:
John, who married Sarah Ratliff
Sarah, who married first Joseph Ratliff and second David, son of Obadiah Harris
Mary who married Thomas Harris. John, Sarah and Mary died in grant County.
Tamar, who married Simeon Cox, and died in Randolph county.
George who resided near Newport.
Zachariah, who married Susanna, daughter of Obadiah Harris, II, and lived in Tama County, Iowa.
Isaiah, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Jesse Hough; both died near Newport.
Catharine, who married first Daniel, son of Jesse Hough, and second Daniel Charles, in Green.
Gulielma, who married Nathan Coggeshall and removed to Grant County.
George Shugart, the son of George Shugart, the subject of the foregoing sketch, was born in July, 1804, and came, when a boy, with his father to this township. He was married to Ruth, daughter of Jonathan Marine, and resides about three fourths of a mile north, east of Newport. He has ever been an esteemed member of the Society of Friends. He has had eleven children, namely, Luzena, who died in her 7th year, Riley, Irena, Jonathan, Jane, Angelina, Charles, Thomas C., William, Hannah, and Ruth Ann.

George Shugart was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1793, George resided in Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange County, North Carolina, USA, and was employed as a farmer. On October 10, 1793, George married Mary Davis in Cane Creek, North Carolina. George and Mary were of the Quaker Faith. About 1800, George was a mill owner in Grant County, Indiana, USA. He died October 10, 1851 in Mill Township, Grant County, Indiana, USA. He is buried in Deer Creek Cemetery. He and Mary were the parents of ten children. Wife: Mary Davis (1775-1851)
