About Gulielma Coggeshall
The Christian Worker, July 8, 1880: Gulielma "Guly" Shugart was born in Wayne County, Indiana, in 1814, and was married to Nathan Coggeshall in August, 1831. They moved to Grant County, Indiana, in September of 1834, where she resided until her departure. It was almost an unbroken forest. She cheerfully shared with her husband the toils and hardships incident to a life in a new country. She was ever ready to extend a hand of help to the oppressed and flying fugitive slave, as well as to the poor and afflicted in other conditions. A little over four months ago she was bitten on the hand by a rat. The hand was swollen and somewhat painful for a time, but the swelling subsided and the hand healed, and there were no fears of anything serious. But soon it became apparent that the poison was diffused through the system, and she suffered greatly. For fourteen weeks she was under medical treatment. She bore her sufferings patiently and hoped to recover, but when it was apparent that she could not, she was resigned, and departed with the blessed assurance of an inheritance in a better country. She was an unassuming but faithful Christian, and a life-long member of the Society of Friends.
