About George Simpson, Fisherman at Newhaven of Ethie

GEORGE SIMPSON

Fisherman at Newhaven of Ethie in Inverkeilor 1768-84

Spurious Pedigree

At least one pedigree published by MyHeritage, probably more than one, claims that George Simpson, here treated, the husband of Margaret Cargill, is that son of the Reverend Thomas Simpson and his second wife Isobel Mackenzie who is reported to have been born on 4 January 1759. MyHeritage This is quite wrong, however. For example, it is impossible for a man who was born in 1759 to have a child who was born in 1768. It follows, therefore, that George Simpson, here treated, is not the same person as George Simpson

Marriage

George Simpson, here treated, married Margaret Cargill. A date for the marriage has not been identified. Their first child George Simpson was a bastard. He was born on 15 May 1768, and it seems clear from his baptismal record that his parents were not married. The baptisms of George's sisters Jean and Elspeth, born on 11 July 1770 and 15 February 1773, and his brother Robert, who was born on 13 February 1774, were tagged on to the end George's baptismal record, and it is not clear from these enties if his parents had been married before these children were born. However, Margaret Cargill is referred to as George Simpson's spouse in the baptismal record of their daughter Janet on 14 August 1776.
