George Smith worked as a bookkeeper in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, before being sentenced to seven years transportation. He arrived in Sydney in 1806 aboard the Fortune and, although a convict, was put to work as a clerk to the Bench of Magistrates in Windsor. He was described as being 5 feet 8 inches (172.7 cms) tall, with a fair complexion, light brown hair and hazel eyes.
He was a resident of the Windsor district from 1808 until his death and on Colonial Secretary's Papers dated 10 Sep 1818 was on the list of person to receive grants of land in 1818. His sentence expired on 10 August 1812. His certificate of emancipation was dated 3 January 1814.
