About George Stronge of Chardstock

As a tailor living in Chard, his will, dated Nov. 20, 1627 and proved Feb. 13, 1635/6, names sons Thomas and Walter, granddaughters Marie, Elizabeth and Joane, and grandsons William and John.

Disputed Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Strong-152

There are unsupported claims on the internet that George Strong was the son of John Strong and Agnes Whitman of Taunton, Somerset; and that George Strong was the husband of Ann Bond. However, George's son Walter did marry a woman named Ann Bond.

Disputed Wife

Seen as “Elizabeth Anne Bond,” daughter of Sir George Bond but his will names a daughter Ann who married Richard Martin. There is no mention of a Walter Strong or George Strong, both of whom were still living when Bond died in 1592.

From Miner Descent:

George Strong was born about 1556, but I haven’t found any direct evidence about the date. His father was John STRANG (c. 1515 in Tauton, Somerset, England – ). He lived most of his life in Chardstock, Devon, England. Chardstock is about 4 miles equal distance from Chard in Somerset and Axminster in Devon. His wife may have been nameed Elizabeth WARY or BOWDIGE. George died about 1634/35, Chard, Somerset, will proved 13 Feb 1634/35.

Most likely this is not the father of John. Naming customs being what they were, you would expect that one of John's sons would be named George but this is not so. Nor are any of his grandsons named George.

It appears that George Strong, a Tailor, originally resided in Chardstock, Dorset, later moving about five miles north to Chard, Somerset. Dorset and Somerset are both maritime counties in the southwest of England. According to Peskett, Chardstock was in Dorset until transferred to the county of Devon in 1896, but remains in the Diocese of Salisbury.
