Note:

George Taylor was born about 1754, probably in VA. His father died in Albemarle Co VA, so perhaps George grew up there.

In 1782 about age 28 in Albemarle County, George married a young widow, Rachel Foster. Her first husband Joseph Watts had died, leaving Rachel with one young daughter. Rachel was a daughter of John Foster and Averilla Haskew. George and Rachel had a typical family of 8 children. A few years earlier, George's older brother William had married Rachel's older sister Sarah Foster.

George Taylor was included in the tax lists of Albemarle County in 1782 and 1787 in Fredericksville Parish. In 1795, George's father died, leaving him some land in Albemarle County. In 1798, George sold this land.

In 1798, George and his family migrated southward to Henry County VA where they lived nearly twenty years from 1798 through 1817. In 1802, George Taylor bought 296 acres of land along the Smith River near Thomas Graves' fish trap from Joseph Martin. (Byars, 20)

On Dec 26 1803 in Henry County, George was a security for the marriage of his step-daughter Nancy Watts to Charles Sutton. (Byars, 51)

George is included in the Henry County tax lists for 1811-1817. (Byars, 10)

Beginning in 1808, George's children began to marry in Henry County. In 1808, John married Polly Rea and Anthony married Elizabeth Lawson; in 1811, son George married Elizabeth McMillion; in 1812, Elizabeth married William Mabe; in 1815, James married Martha Worsham; about 1816, Rachel married Jesse McMillion.

In Jan 1817, George sold his land in Henry County to John Redd and the family migrated to Giles Co TN. George died between 1817 and 1820 in his early sixties. Unfortunately, he did not leave a will, but his children can be determined from other documents and recorded transactions.

In 1820, widow Rachel appeared in the Giles County census as head of household. Sons Henry and Simeon were probably living with her, but the listing shows some unidentified people in her household. Her other children were married with most of them living nearby (except James). Son John was already deceased, but his widow Polly lived nearby. Rachel Taylor 2 m 16-26 [Henry 27, Simeon 24] 1 m 10-16 [who?] 1 f > 45 [Rachel 66] 2 f 16-26 [who?] 2 f 10-16 In Feb 1823, George's children settled some of the estate when [son] George Taylor, Henry Taylor, James Taylor, William Mabe and wife Elizabeth sold to Jesse and Rachel McMillion 178 acres on Richland Creek for $500. (McCann) Son John had already died, but it is not clear why Anthony and Simeon were not part of this transaction. However, on May 12 1823 in Henry County VA, Simeon Taylor deeded his 1/8 share of a tract of his late father George Taylor to Anthony Taylor. (McCann)

In 1830, Rachel (about age 76) was still the head of her own household which included one young female age 15-20. Though Rachel was not mentioned in the 1836 Giles County tax list, her sons were listed in District 11: George Sr 160 acres, Henry 205 acres, James 79 acres, Simeon (no acreage). (1836 Tax List) In June 1839, Rachel made a gift to her daughter Nancy Sutton of a mare, a trunk, and clothing because Nancy "not having an equal share of property given her with the balance of my children." (McCann) Apparently, Nancy had not been included in the bequests from George's estate. It is somewhat surprising that Rachel felt so strongly about the omission of Nancy in George's will because she was not a natural daughter, but a step-daughter. Rachel died in 1839 about age 85. [how is this date known?]

Email from Debra McCann, 12/13/2003; chenae@@ap.net: Thanks for your reply and for the Taylor info. Attached is a text file on what I have been able to put together so far on the Taylors. You will notice that I show George Taylor b. 1754 married Rachel Foster rather than Rachel Walker as your file shows. Rachel Foster is the daughter of John Foster and Averilla Haskew of Albemarle Co., VA, where Rachel first married Joseph William Watts in 1773. They had a daughter named Nancy who married Charles Sutton in 1803 in Henry Co TN [AKB: should be VA]. Rachel second married George Taylor in 1782 in Albemarle Co., VA and they moved to Henry Co., VA in 1798, after George sold the land he had inherited from his father George Taylor when he died in 1795 in Albemarle Co., VA. George and Rachel later moved to Giles Co., TN, where George died in 1823 and Rachel died in 1839. Before her death Rachel deeded to her daughter Nancy her mare, trunk, etc., because she didn't inherit an equal share of George's property as did his other children. I am still working on identifying the Taylors who were in Giles Co., as descendants of George and Rachel Taylor.
