About George Coggins Veazey
George Coggins Veazey
Leroy Veazey and his family have donated a number of articles belonging to this early family to the "Shake Rag" exhibit in the Hopkins County Historical Society Museum in Madisonville, KY. When George died, the family honored his wish to have his body conveyed o the Veazey cemetery by a horse-drawn wagon. He thought cars were a passing fancy and would not survive the test of time. He thought his survivors should not be frivolous for such a solemn event.
George's cabin has not been restored and is surrounded by a hog farming operation. Leroy Veazey took a Veazey relative to visit this site in October 1994. The large original logs are visible in many places. George had a nail or peg in his floor that acted as a sundial. When the shadow was at a certain place it was "dinner time."
