George Browning Wilbur was born in Hubbardston, Massachusetts January 13, 1829 (died July 15, 1914). He married Hannah Reid May 13, 1845. As a young man, he learned the carpenter trade, which he followed for some years. He served on the Hubbardston school committee in 1852. In partnership with Jonas G. Clark, they engaged in California trade, with George Wilbur purchasing the merchandise and shipping it to by sailing vessel to California, where Clark sold it. This worked out well for Clark, but George Wilbur lost all that he had. He started buying and selling property and later was interested in the building of the Santa Fe Rail Road, serving as one of its early directors. He was a businessman of exceptional ability and during his long life accumulated a large estate. He was the director of the Boston Safe Deposit Company for many years and director of many other corporations. He never really retired and at age ninety was still attending his office as least once a week. He never seemed to fail mentally and at age 94 looked many years younger. He was very public spirited. He resided in Watertown, Massachusetts for some years then in West Newton, Massachusetts. His wife Hannah died there December 4, 1882. Some years later he married Frances Decker and moved to Bay State Road, Boston.
His daughter Mary Hill, her husband Townsend Hill, and their daughter Alice came to live with George Wilbur after his wife died and continued to live in West Newton until Mrs. Hill's death in 1906. George Wilbur had a summer home in Falmouth and extensive land holdings on Cape Cod from Bass River, South Dennis to Wood's Hole, Falmouth. These properties included the 1744 Nickerson house, 215 Main Street and a home he built on Cove Road, both in South Dennis.
His only son, Charles Wilbur, was born in Hubbardston, Massachusetts on March 19, 1850. He graduated from M.I.T in 1871, a civil engineer. He was a surveyor for the Santa Fe railroad, Upon completion of the Santa Fe, he went to work as a surveyor for the Mexican Central railroad. After leaving that position, he became interested in the Pawnee Ranch in Larned, Kansas ( the former Fort Larned).
