About Georgiana Kate Webb

Georgiana Kate Cropper traveled as a Mormon Pioneer to Utah departing on June 26, 1856, and arriving October 11, 1856, in the Jacob Croft Company. She was born May 31, 1849, in Spring Creek, Harris County, Texas, the daughter of George Waters Cropper and Sebrina Land Cropper. They were listed in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Houston, Harris County, Texas, as follows: George W. Cropper, 48, born in Virginia, Sebrina, 38, born in Tennessee, Thomas, 7, Lee R., 5, Wise, 3, and Kate, 1 year old, all born in Texas. Also living with them were three of Sebrina's children from her first marriage to Callythias Ferris Matheny, who passed away in 1840: Sims Lafayette Matheny, 16, born in Tennessee, Nancy Sabrina Matheny, 12, born in Arkansas, and Amelia Chorolee Matheny, 10, born in Texas. Sadly, the following year, George Waters Cropper passed away at the age of just 49 years old. George had a patent on 320 acres of land in Montgomery County, Texas, with a patent date of April 8, 1856, according to a Texas Land Title Abstracts record. Two months later Sebrina must have sold the land and moved her children to Utah.

In an 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Fillmore, Millard County, Utah, Sebrina, 48, was living with her children, Thomas, 17, Leigh, 15, George W., 13, and Georgiana Kate, 11 years old. She was listed as Sebrina Croft not Sebrina Cropper, and was living in a home with Hannah Wen, 20, a seamstress and her daughter Letitia, 1 year old. Three doors down was a Jacob Croft, 52, and wife Charity, 49, and children, Alvin, 16, Mary J., 13, and Lavina, 8 years old. Sebrina was probably the plural wife of Jacob Croft.

Georgina Kate married Chauncey Gilbert Webb on December 20, 1867, in Deseret, Millard County, Utah. Chauncey had previously been married to Almira Sophia Taft (1832-1874) and they had several children. Kate and Chauncey had their first child, Leslie Gilbert Webb, in 1869, then another son, Milo Wise Webb in 1871, and a daughter, Gilberta Bertha Web in 1875, followed by another son, George Percy Webb in 1877, and 3 more daughters, Kathleen Clementine in 1879, Ethel Matheny in 1885, and Nellie Blythe in 1892. They may have also given birth to three more children, Carlisle, Adolph, and Theodora, who all died as infants. According to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Kate indicated she had given birth to seven children.

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Fillmore, Millard County, Utah, Chauncey Gilbert Webb, 33, and Georgiana Kate Webb, 21, were living with their son Leslie, 1 year old. Chauncey was working as a cattle dealer born in Ohio, whose personal property was valued at $9,500. Living next door was Georgiana Kate's mother, Sebrina Land Matheny Cropper Croft, 58, and her son George W. Cropper, 23, who was working as a cattle dealer. Also living with them were Mary Hawley, 12, and John Stiler, 14, but I don't know their relationship to the family. Mary may have been related to Raymond LeRoy Hawley, who later married Georgiana Kate's daughter Nellie Blythe. George had real estate valued at $500 and a personal estate of $925. Georgiana Kate's mother, Sebrina, passed away 8 years later on October 27, 1878, at the age of 66 years old.

Georgina Kate's half sister, Nancy Sabrina Matheny, who was 12 years older than Kate, had married William Schrader Hawley and they had a daughter named Mary Leminda Amelia (Minnie) Hawley, but she was born in 1869 so would have been only 1 year old in the 1870 census. Raymond LeRoy Hawley may have also been a descendant to the same Hawley family, but I've not found that connection yet.

By the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Deseret, Millard County, Utah, Georgiana Kate Webb, 31, was living with her children, Leslie G., 11, Milo W., 9, Gilberta, 6, George Percy, 3, and Clementine, 1 year old. Chauncey Gilbert Webb was not living with the family by then, but living next door was Georgiana Kate's brother, Leigh R. Cropper, 35, and his wife Fanny, 34, and children Alice S., 14, George W., 12, Kate, 10, Leigh R., Jr., 8, Edgar L., 5, and Fanny, 1 year old. Leigh was working as a farmer. Georgiana Kate and Leigh were both born in Texas, and all of her children were born in Utah. Leigh's wife, Fanny, was born in England, and all of their children were born in Utah.

In the 1900 census, Georgiana Kate was living in Los Angeles, California, with her children, listed as follows in the census record: Kate, 52, Bertha or Gilberta, 24, married daughter Kate W. Holloway, a 21-year old widow and her 7-month old son, Lee Holloway, and younger daughters Ethel Matheny Webb 15, and Nellie Blythe Webb, 8 years old. They were renting their home located at 634 S. Figueroa Street. Kate W. had married Jackson Lee Holloway in Utah on Christmas Day, 1897. By this time, older sons, Leslie, 31, Milo, 29, and George 23, were probably living with their father in Mexico. Kathleen "Kate" Clementine Webb had married husband Lee Galloway in 1898 and they had a son named Lee born in 1899 in California.

In about 1903 Kate's daughter, Gilberta, married Guy Washington Rollins, the son of John Henry Rollins, Sr., and his wife Nancy Malinda West Rollins. John Henry was the son of James Henry Rollins and Eveline Walker. Nancy was the daughter of Samuel Walker West and Margaret Cooper West. James Henry was born in New York but moved to Ohio while a young boy after the death of his father in 1820. Eveline's parents were born in New York and New Jersey, but they moved to Ohio in the early 1800's. Samuel and Margaret West were both born in Tennessee. All of Guy's ancestors were early Mormon converts, joining the church in the 1830's, not long after it was founded.

In the 1910 census, Georgiana Kate Webb, 60, was living with her daughter, Nellie Blythe Webb, 18, and a grandson, Frank Webb, 4 years old, at 1949 Bernard Park in Los Angeles, a home they were renting. Kate had been married for 42 years and had given birth to 9 children, 7 of whom were living. Since Frank, her grandson, and was born in Mexico, he was probably child of her son Leslie Gilbert Webb, who had lived in Mexico with his father Chauncey Gilbert Webb. Chauncey passed away in Mexico in 1923 and Leslie in 1931, in Chihuahua, Mexico.

By the 1920 census, Georgiana Kate, 70, was living with her married daughter, Nellie Blythe Hawley, 28, her husband Raymond LeRoy Hawley, 26, and their daughter, Blythe R., 2 years, 5 months old. Their rental home was located at 144 West Avenue 31 in Los Angeles, and Raymond was working as the owner of a rock crushing company. Raymond was born in Utah, Nellie Blythe in Arizona and their daughter Blythe in California. He was the son of Henry Wise Hawley and Mary Amelia "Molly" Maxfield Hawley.

In 1930, Georgiana Kate was no longer living with her daughter, Nellie Blythe Hawley. Nellie Blythe, 34, and her husband Ray, 36, and their daughter, Blythe R., 12, were living with two more daughters, Barbara L. Hawley, 9, and Patricia J. Hawley, 4, at 341 North Ardmore Avenue in Los Angeles. They owned their home which was valued at $15,000 and they had a radio in their home. Ray was the president of a rock crushing company.

Georgiana Kate Cropper Webb passed away March 13, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chauncey in 1923, sons Leslie Gilbert in 1931, and Milo Wise in 1915. Daughter Kathleen Clementine Webb passed away in 1940, and son George Percy Webb in 1950. Daughter Blythe passed away December 19, 1976, in, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, at the age of 84 years old. Her husband Ray had passed away on April 25, 1976, also in Glendale, California. He was 82 years old at the time of his death, being a little younger than Nellie Blythe.

I don't know what happened to Blythe and Raymond's three daughters, Blythe R. born in 1918, Barbara L., in 1921, and Patricia J., in 1926. Nor do I have any information on Leslie Gilbert Webb's two sons, Henry Webb, born in 1901 or Frank Webb, born in 1905. They were both born in Mesa Sandia, Durango, Mexico. Although they were living with Gilberta and Guy Washington Rollins in the 1910 census for Los Angeles, California, when Henry was 8 and Frank was almost 5 years old.
