William Bird, a farmer, was arraigned at the criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court yesterday before the Chief Justice on a charge of perjury. At the hearing at the petty sessions Mrs Miller putin a counter claim, amongst which was an item of £1 for a dishonoured cheque, which was the cheque now in question. His defence was that the cheque was a loan, and that the prisoners statements were true. A number of witnesses were examined, both for the prosecution and the defence, their evidence being very contradictory. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and the accused was discharged,

AN IRATE LANDLADY.

At the District Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. H. Nicolson, P. M., Georgina Miller, hotelkeeper at Merton in the Mansfield district, was complained against for

assaulting Charles Stocks, by business a chemist. Complainant, who is in receipt of remittances from home, came out here for the benefit of his health, and was told by defendant that Merton was the very place for him. He went there in February last, and remained until the following December, during which period he had given defendant three seperate sums of £12, £35 and £20; in all, £67. His health did not improve at Merton, and the relations between defendant and himself became strained. He determined therefore to take "French leave" and started at 4 a.m.on December 27 for Melbourne, walking all the way. He put up at the Shamrock Hotel in Lonsdale-street. and on the 6th inst. defendant came to the hotel and told him he was a low scoundrel, and slapped him severly on the face. She also struck him several times over the face with an umbrella, expressing a wish at the same time that she had another to break

over his head. Complainant submitted to the outrage quite meekly, and said, in evidence, that he "would not dream of striking a woman, even in self-defence." There

was no denial of the assault but, in defence, it was urged that complainant had brought it on himself by departing clandestinely, and giving defenedant the trouble of finding him. Mr Nicolson, P.M., said the assault was of a very serious character, and it was a curious thing for a woman to travel all the way from Merton and follow complainant to the hotel, and assault him in the violent manner she had done. A fine of £3 was inflicted, with £2/7/ costs.
