About Gerhard I von Rieneck, Burchgraf von Mainz

Gerhard I was the last count of Rieneck in male descendency. His title and possessions were inherited in 1108 by his sole daughter Adelheid, who married Arnold II, count van Loon / de Looz. As such, the title transfer to the van Loon / de Looz family. In 1156/57, the van Loon / de Looz family adopts the "von Rieneck" name.

In 1366, the county of Rieneck belongs to Mainz.

Footnote: The year 1366 coincides with the end of the existence of the county van Loon / de Looz - which was transferred at that time into the possessions of the bishopry of Liège.

Chapter 22. GRAFEN von MAINZ

1. GERHARD (-after 1106). Graf von Mainz. m HELWIDE von Blieskastel, daughter of [GOTTFRIED [III] Graf im Bliesgau & his wife Mathilde de Luxembourg. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Mathildem [de Luscelenburch]" as mother of "comitem Folmerum et sorores eius Helvidem, quam habuit comes Gerardus de Reneke dyocesis Herbipolensis et illam qua dux de Bronsviic genuit filiam, que in Sclavia hereditavit"[1877]. As noted above, there appears to be some chronological doubt about the accuracy of this report. In particular, it is unlikely that the mistress of Heinrich "der Löwe" Duke of Saxony could have been the sister of the wife of Gerhard Graf von Mainz. However, assuming that Helwide was a member of the Blieskastel family, it is chronologically probable that she was the sister of Graf Gottfried [I]. Gerhard & his wife had one child:

a) AGNES von Mainz . The primary source which confirms her parentage and marriage has not yet been identified. m ([1100]%29 ARNAUD [I] Comte de Looz, son of EMMO Comte de Looz & his wife --- (-after 1125). Graf von Mainz.
