About Gerrit Evertsz. Eijlander / Eylander

Gerrit Eijlander (= Islander) was born in September 1862 in the city of Ede, located in the mid-southeastern part of the Netherlands, son of Evert Eijlander (47 years old, organ player) and Truitje Glindhorst aka Truijtjen Ariensen. Source: scan of his birth certificate. He was named after his grandfather Gerrit Eijlander.

Gerrit had in Ede the following siblings:

  • Aaltje, born on August 8, 1854;
  • Gerritje, October 3, 1857, died on August 31, 1859;
  • Rijk, November 19, 1858;
  • Gerritje, November 13, 1859, d. August 11, 1860;
  • Gerrit, November 13, 1859, d. February 23, 1860;
  • Jan, November 22, 1863.

Their father Evert Eijlander was an organ player in all those years.

On April 28, 1871 his father Evert Eijlander, music master (muziekmeester), died at the age of 57 years in Ede, province Gelderland, Netherlands.

On 27 August 1883 his brother Ryk Eijlander (27 years old, farmer) arrived on the ship Leerdam, which departed from Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the port of New York, Castle Garden.

On 20 June 1884 Gerrit Eijlander (21, farmer), his mother Truytje (66, farmer), his sister Aaltje Eijlander (29, farmer) and his brother Jan (20, farmer) arrived on the ship Pennland, which departed from Antwerp, Belgium, at the port of New York, Castle Garden. Their destination was Kensington, nowadays a southern district of Chicago, with a big railway station, Cook County, Illinois.

On 31 January 1890 Gerrit Eylander married in the Dutch truck farmers settlement of South Holland, located just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at the age of 28 years the six years younger Annie Van Bearn.

On 9 May 1891 they had in Chicago a daughter [Gertrude], on 24 April 1892 daughter Gysbertha, on 13 November 1894 in South Holland daughter Adrianna, and on 15 September 1896, in Chicago again, son Ryk.

In April 1910 Gerrit Eylander (45 years old, born in Holland, farm laborer at a truck farm), his wife Annie (42, Illinois), their children Gertrude (18, Illinois), Bertha (17, Illinois), Evert (16, Illinois), Carrie (15, Illinois), Richard (13, Illinois) and Jennie (5, Illinois), and his grandfather-in-law Adrian Van Baren (89, Holland, immigrated in 1864, widower) were living at their own house in Thornton [Township, incl. South Holland], located just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In January 1920 Gerrit Eylander (56, immigrated in 1884, farmer), his wife Anna (54), their children Gertie (28), Evert (25, farming), Carrie (24), Jennie (17, Illinois), Alice (8, Illinois), and his nephew Winnie Van Duezee (0, Illinois) were living at their own home in South Holland, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1930 Garrit Eylander (66, immigrated in 1877, no occupation) and his wife Annie (64) were living in their own house, worth $2000, at Indiana Avenue in still South Holland, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.
