p. 41 . . . Gerrit Janszen Roos, carpenter. . . Of the oldest New Netherland stock, Gerrit's maternal grandparents were among the French who first settled at New Amsterdam. Gerrit himself was the only child of Maria Vigne and Jan Roos. Gerrit was employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Dutch church; in September 1659, he married Tryntje Arents, a native of Amsterdam. Gerrit's will, dated 3 September 1697 (New York Historical Society. Collections. 1892. Wills I:297-98.] mentions his eldest son, Peter, living at Utrecht, Netherlands; Gerritt Jansen and Aeltie, children of his deceased son, Johannes; Gerrit Provost, eldest son of his eldest daughter, Cornelia, the widow of Elias Provost (she widowed by 1686, when she is listed as Dutch church member living on Smith Street next to Jan Vigne; by the time [p. 42] of the will she had married secondly Jacob deMoree); and daughter Affie (1665-1728), wife of Johannes Van Gelder, carpenter and cabinetmaker. Jacob deMoree, Johannes van Gelder, and Jacob Boelen (70 pounds 1695] were named executors. Gerrit's wife, Tryntje, had come to America with her sister Bayken, Bayken's husband, Boele Roelofszen, and their three children, including Aefje (c.1656-1708/10 and Jacob (1657-1729). Boele, once a Frisian farmer and tailor, found himself by the close of the 1680s with then five children ranging from infancy to fourteen years, while their older children had left home: daughter Aefje had married (in 1675) Dirck Ten Eyck (? -after 1710), corrdwainer and Leislerian. Jacob (ca. 1657-1729), today known as 'the outstanding silversmith of his time,' had married in 1679 Catharina Clock (1654-1730). Between 1680 and 1690 six of his eight children were born.
