His wife Mary and friend Mary Goodnow were attached by Indians. Mary Fay succeeded in making it to the fort, however, Mary Goodnow, who was a cripple, could not escape. She was scalped and her body found within sight of the garrison. A company marched in pursuit--found the Indians--as well as little Mary Goodnow's scalp
Mary Fay was pregnant at the time and it is believed it caused her daughter to have a trembling disorder,
