About Gershom Swann

May also be shown as "Swann" or "Swanne". Gershom was born in Cambridge, MA on Jun. 30, 1654 to "Jno and Rebecca", John Swann (1621 - 1708) and Rebecca Palfrey (or Palfory) Swann (1631 - 1654). [See Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850, Cambridge Births]

Gershom's parents both immigrated from England. They married in Cambridge, MA on Feb. 1, 1650/1651. Gershom was the second child, after Ruth, who was born on Mar. 1, 1652/1653. Gershom's mother died shortly after his birth in 1654. His father married 2nd Mary Pratt (1633 - 1723) on Mar. 1 1655/1656 in Cambridge, Massachusets.

From the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1906: SWAN, GERSHOM, 1654-1708, Cambridge, Mass. In King Philip's War, under Capt. Sill, 1675, and in garrison at Springfield, 1676.

After military service, Gershom married Sarah Holden of Woburn on Dec. 20, 1677. Gershom and Sarah had seven children, all born in Cambridge:

1) Sarah, b. abt. 1679; d. Apr. 25, 1699

2) Rebecca (1st), b. Aug. 24, 1681; d. Aug. 25, 1691 in Medford, MA

3) John, b. Oct. 3, 1683; d. Mar. 31, 1752 in Arlington, MA. Married Elizabeth Cowdery on Mar. 25, 1720

4) Ruth, b. Dec. 25, 1685, Married Theophilus Richardson on Apr. 24, 1711 in Watertown

5) Abigail, b. Feb. 2, 1686/1687. married John Richardson on Jul. 1, 1714

6) Lydia (or Liddea), b. Nov. 10, 1689; d. aft. 1735 in Roxbury. Married William Mansur on Feb. 2, 1714/1715

7) Rebecca (2nd), b. bef Aug. 14, 1698. Married George Abbott on Feb. 2, 1715/1716.

Gershom died in Cambridge and is assumed to have been interred in the Old Burying Ground (in Harvard Square), possibly near his father, who died a month earlier. His wife, Sarah, survived him by 29 years and was laid to rest in the Old Burying Ground in Arlington, MA, which was originally part of Cambridge.
