As an infant Gertrude fell from a high double bed in the main bedroom and suffered brain damage leaving her severely handicapped. Her mother never forgave herself for this and right to her death Gertrude was unable to care for herself, control her physical motions etc.

A young doctor, newly out of medical school, who arrived in Grafton indicated to Sarah that an operation to relieve pressure and the insertion of a plate could help improve quality of life. Sarah could never bring herself to approve of such a medical procedure.
