About Gertrude Benson
Gertrude Wood Benson, 103, New Plymouth, suffered a stroke and passed away quietly Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at her home in New Plymouth, nine days before her 104th birthday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1st Ward, New Plymouth. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the church, prior to services. Interment will follow at Park View Cemetery, New Plymouth. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, New Plymouth. She was the youngest child, born on April 16,1905, to Willard A. and Eva Wood Bird in Minersville, Utah. She married Nathan Benson on June 9, 1925. They were married 24 years when Nathan succumbed to Landry's Paralysis in 1949. They had one child, Afton (Penny). She later married widower Roy Benson on March 4,1953. They were married 25 years until Roy's death in 1978. She lived in Parowan, Utah, for most of her life but moved to Idaho for health reasons. Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Afton (Penny) Nelson; stepchildren, Ralph (Linda) Benson and Roy (Jackie) Benson; grandchildren, Deborah Oliveira, Micky Micheli, Darrel Christie, Shane Christie, Curtis White and Michelle White and their families. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Nathan Benson and Roy Benson; sisters, Vera and Ruth; granddaughter, Wendi Jo Orton; and five stepchildren. She was well known for her quilts, doilies and her famous scrubbers. She did alterations for many years in Utah. She was well loved by anyone who met her.
