Gertrude O'Reilly Collins died Oct. 26, 2011. A 9 a.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at St. Matthias Church in Somerset, N.J. The viewing will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, N.J.

Mrs. Collins, late of Somerset, N.J., was born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 20, 1926. She was the third child of John and Gertrude O'Reilly. She went to P.S. 177 on Avenue P, and graduated from Lafayette High School, where she was voted most athletic. After high school, she went to secretarial school and then landed a job on Wall Street with the JP Morgan bank. She married and had four children, John, Jane, Susan, and Barbara, whom she raised with great love and good humor. She served her community in Somerset as president of the Saint Matthias Rosary Society, as a board member at the Cedar Hill Swim Club, and as an officer of the P.T.A. of the Saint Matthias School. She worked as a secretary at Rutgers University and Saint Peter's Medical Center. She earned her B.A. from Rutgers when she was 57 with a double major in psychology and literature. An avid traveler, she visited Russia, Ireland, Bermuda, France, England and other countries.

Gertrude Collins lived a long and fruitful life. She loved her family deeply and was deeply loved in return. She is survived by her children, John, Jane, Susan and Barbara Collins; her son-in-law Afeef Khalil; her dear friend, Lynn Bussinger, and her grandchildren, Zayn and Layla Khalil and Sam Collins-Zaluda. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Gertrude O'Reilly, and her brothers, John and William O'Reilly.
