About Gertrude Löwy

  • Residence: Rockville, Maryland 20850, USA
  • Residence: Rockville, Czech Republic, United States, Rochester, N.Y., England, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Israel, France, Pilzen

Gertrude Lowy, 87, who in retirement lived in Rockville for 25 years, died at Rockville Nursing Home on Oct. 24, 2003. She was a resident of the Revitz House in Rockville for 11 years until May of this year. Mrs. Lowy and her husband, the late Oscar Lowy, lived in Rochester, N.Y., after they immigrated to the United States in 1955. She worked as a seamstress at the Bonds Factory in that city. She was born in Trest and grew up near Pilzen in the Czech Republic. She was educated there and in Switzerland and spoke six languages. After their marriage in 1939, the Lowys were honeymooning in Italy when their homeland was invaded and World War II broke out. They spent the war years in France and England, later returning home for three years. Just before the Communists invaded Czechoslovakia, the family found refuge in the newly established state of Israel, where they lived for seven years. The Spielberg Shoah Foundation recorded Gertrude Lowy's war experiences. In retirement, Mrs. Lowy volunteered regularly at the Isaac Franck Jewish Public Library in Rockville. She was an avid bridge player and loved to travel, read and crochet. She is survived by two daughters, Michlean and husband George Amir of Rockville and Eva and husband Nicholas Magorka of Crofton; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother in Australia; and many relatives and friends around the world. Sagel Funeral Home in Rockville handled the funeral arrangements.
