  • Austria: Jewish Women Artists: "Realizing that there was hardly any hope of guidance or recognition from their fellow male artists, Jewish women artists— together with their gentile counterparts—established their own system of education and representation. The most important art school was the Viennese Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen, established in 1897, which held a special place among all the art schools founded for women and girls since it marked the beginning of the first intensive art education for women. In comparison to other art schools, the level of education was quite high, there was no restriction in admission and the tuition fee was kept relatively low. Among the students were Susi Singer-Schinnerl, Vally Wieselthier, Fritzi Löw-Lazar, Marianne Perlmutter, Lilli Rethi (1894–1969), Gertrude Zuckerkandl-Stekel, Grete Wolf-Krakauer and Ella Iranyi (1888-1942; she was deported to Izbica, Poland). The Art School for Women and Girls existed until 1945, but closed its doors to Jewish women artists in 1938, when the school was subordinated to the municipality of Vienna and used to inculcate Nazi ideology."
