"Aunty Gertie" was a frequent visitor when I lived in Kirk Hallam with my grandparents, for she and my grandma Winnie were close friends despite being only step sisters with no blood relation. Gertrude never married. She was "in service" and once (I believe) housekeeper to the Major of Derby. She left after a long period "living in"with a Derby family called the White's and got a job at the Derby school for the Deaf. I remember her as a kind and generous person who sometimes seemed a bit strict. She worked hard. After leaving domestic service she lived in a flat in Peartree, Derby. The area of little terraced houses got a bit rough, but she never seemed nervous of being on her own.
