Geurt Hendrickse Van Schoonhoven

brief biography

Gerrit came to America and settled in Beverwyck in the 1650's. He supported himself through carpentry. Both Gerrit and Maritie were members of the Albany Dutch Church. In Aug 1700, Gerrit made a will calling himself a yeoman of Halfmoon. As was the custom, he acknowledged the supremacy of God and his own allegience to the king of England.

He probably came from Holland, the land of his birth. He was of "Halve Maan" (Halfmoon) in 1675. He was a carpenter, and had a farm on Cahoos Island in 1681.
