Shipbuilder - "Gideon Barstow & Son" located at the bend of Main and Water Streets in Mattapoisett.

According to "Herman Melville's Whaling Years" by Wilson L. Heflin, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Thomas Farel Heffernan, he built the Acushnet in which Herman Melville first learned whaling. "Her mainmast stood 113 feet 9 inches above the spar deck. The foremast was some 5 feet shorter, and the mizzenmast was approximately 90 feet in height."
