They arrived at Delaware Bay, and settled in York Co PA about 1755. Later the family moved to what is now known as Gerrardstown WV. Gilbert and his father built houses in Gerrardstown, now Historical Homes. Fought in Rev. War

He married twice. He married Martha Snodgrass. He married Lady Jane Crawford York Co. PA, 1755. Jane was born in North IRL 1726. Jane died 1854 in Berkley Co., West Virginia, at 128 years of age. The first McKown family in the U.S. was Gilbert McKown, who with his wife Lady Jane Crawford and son James came from Ireland via Delaware Bay and settled in York County, Pennsylvania about 1755 or later. Arround 1763 Gilbert and family moved to Middletown, Frederick County later known as Gerrardstown, Berkley County, W.Va. He fought in the Revolutionary War and was present at Yorktown when General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. Gilbert's son, James also fought in the Revolutionary War.

According to the book, Jackson County West Virginia, Past and Present, Gilbert McKown and his wife, Lady Jane Crawford, and son James, emigrated from Ireland, arrived via Delaware Bay, traveled east and settled in York County, PA in about 1755. Later, Gilbert and family moved to Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia, later known as Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia, and West Virginia in 1863. He fought in the Revolutionary War and was present at Yorktown, Virginia when Cornwallis, a British General, surrendered on October 19, 1791 to General George Washington. Gilbert returned to Ireland in 1782, for his father, Andrew, and they constructed homes in Gerrardstown that still stand and remain as Historical Homes.
