About Giles Carter, Jr.

concerns

This Giles is the same as Giles Carter, Jr.. Merge must be performed by a curator in order to preserve relationships.

Last place of residence seems to be incorrect. Further research is warranted.

comments

Date and place of death have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1760 in North Carolina (unattested).

Giles Carter Jr.

Was born between 1681 and 1690 as proven by his fathers will which stated Giles Jr. was under age 18 in 1699 and 1711 when he sells real estate (required to be age 21) Giles Carter's first wife Hannah Rowen likely died in 1685 after her signing her dower rights when Giles sold their life interest in the house and 50 acres given them by the will of James Crewes to William Randolph in 1684. The remarriage of Giles to the daugher of William Sewell after this date and birth of their son Giles Carter jr. likely occurred in 1686 which is near the middle of the range of his estimated birth. Giles Carter jr. is proven to have married Mary (the daughter of Robert Poval a neighbor of Giles Carter sr) by his will which makes bequests to his daughter Mary and son in law Giles Carter jr. They are believed to have married when Giles was 21 about 1707. Giles Carter left a legal orphan by his father's death chose William Sewell as his guardian and became the sold heir and administrator of William Sewell's estate when he died will date 1725 Henrico va. Giles Carter jr. remained in the Henrico being involved in witnessing legal records and land transactions. The last record for him in 1736 in that area. He moved to what was then Edgecombe Co North Carolina by 1742 where he appears in deed records with his younger sons: Robert, Giles, John, William, James, and Charles. Older sons Benjamin, Theodorick, and Poval remained in Henrico. This area of Edgecombe nc was on Pretty and Pork Creek on the Rapannock river. His former property now under lake Gasden. The wills of several of his sons are found in Halifax NC in census district 6 of the 1800 census; Robert and his wife, William, Charles, and James.later made into Halifax county NC after 1760. Giles Carter jr. (now called Sr. as he had a son Giles who assumed the jr status) last witnessed a deed in late 1760 so died about that time. He was NOT the Giles Carter of King George who died 19 july 1746 (will date) this date is used in error by many researchers as the dod of Giles Carter jr of Henrico, but this Giles Carter was the son of a William Carter from the Maryland area and not Giles Carter jr. of Henrico Va. The given name Giles not being unique to any specific Carter family as now proven by DNA testing. Some put the place of death of Giles Carter jr. as the Round Hills of Henrico connecting it with the will date of Giles of King George. Half brother Theodorick did own some property near white oak swamp that was called by that name, but Round Hill Virginia is located in King George Va.. To confuse matters further this Giles of King George also married a woman named Mary as did Giles Carter jr. of Henrico. This Giles Carter's wife as shown by records of the King George area to be Mary Reedes not the Mary Poval of Henrico. Several of Giles Carter jr.'s sons and their descendants moved to Tenn : William, Charles, Harris, Gedun, and Jarrott O.D. Carter. Others moved to Kentucky: Robert jr. Joseph the descendants of Robert and Charles are of Ydna Haplo Group R1a1a. Matching Poval Carter and Daniel Carter's descendants who remained in Virginia.

Giles Carter's daughter Mary and her husband Ralph Hudspeth jr. also moved to North Carolina about the time Giles Carter jr. did where her descendants are found in records: Giles Carter Hudspeth and others were in the Revolutionary war with Giles Carter jr.'s son Giles b. abt 1725 and living in Warren co NC received a land grant for his service. His descendants moved to York Sc for a time before moving north to Tenn and then Illinois.

Giles Carter jr. was born in Henrico co Va by legal documents his birth range is between the years of 1681 and 1688 most likely the year 1686. He was the youngest Child of Giles Carter sr and his new wife Hannah Sewell. His first wife Hannah Rowen died about 1685. In the early 1690's grandfather William Sewell gave him a horse and in 1699 witnessed Giles Carter sr.'s will. In this will Giles Carter jr. was said to be under age 18.. In 1704 Giles Carter Jr. chose William Sewell as his guardian he had to be age 16 to make this choice. In 1711 Giles Carter jr. sold the land his father had given him by deed on 1 Aug. 1698. At that time he had to be age 21 to sell this land and his wife Mary signed her dower release. Giles Carter jr. is mentioned in a neighbor's will. Robert Poval gave Giles Carter 10 barrels of corn to start his crop and mentioned his daughter Mary Carter. There was another unrelated Giles Carter who was married to Mary Reeds in King George co Va that died with a will in 1745 that many confuse with Giles Carter jr. But this Giles was the son of a William Carter not Giles Carter sr. of Henrico. In 1725 Grandfather William Sewell died making Giles Carter his administrator and willing his entire estate to Giles Carter jr. Giles Carter liven in Henrico co Va and is involved in court records until 1742 at this time he moved with his younger children to Edgecombe co NC buying land in the pretty creek area near the river. His daughter Mary Hudspeth moved with him also. Older sons Poval Carter, Benjamin and Theodorick remained in Henrico.

Giles Carter jr's neighbors in NC were Joseph Bradley and sons: Robert Carter, Giles Carter, William Carter, John Carter, James Carter. Giles Carter jr of Henrico was referred to as Giles Carter Sr. in NC because he had a son Giles who assumed the jr. designation. Giles Carter sr. is last seen witnessing a deed in the fall of 1760 after this date only the Giles Carter was used as his father had died. Most of Giles Carter's children lived in the part of Edgecombe co Nc that became Halifax nc by a county line change. They lived in the NW quarter of Halifax in census district #6 where most are found in the 1786, 1790 and 1800 census. Younger son Giles moved just across the line in adjoining Warren co NC where he died in the 1790's with a will, Sons William, James, Charles, and Robert left wills in Halifax from 1790 until 1810.
