GILLETTE SAVARD The ancestress of the Filteaux was Gillette Savard, a "fille de roi"'protected by the king of France. In the Quebec census for the winter of 1666, after her marriage, she declared her age: 18 years old. Therefore, she was born about 1648. The notary did not mention if Gillette was an orphan by naming her mother and father: Francois Savard and Jeanne Moran. She said she was from Melun, head town of the department of Seine-et-Marne, on the Seine,at the confluence of the Angueuil, 46 kilometers south-east of Paris. This ancient, Celtic fortified place today has a population of more than 36,000 inhabitants. The great Caesar mentioned this ancient Gallic city, in the year 53 B.C. In 1430, Joan of Arc was successful in delivering Melun, under siege by the English, to Charles VII, King of France. Gillette Savard lived in the center of this historic city since she attended the church of Saint-Aspais, built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and sometimes noted because of its stained glass windows dating from the Renaissance. At the time of the wax of 1939-1945, bombs heavily damaged this historic building which then had to be restored.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD Gillette Savard took over the rudder of the family barge. On 23 October 1700, her son-in-law Jean Mimeau gave her a receipt "for an obligation from his marriage contract with Suzanne Feuilleteau". At the age of 55, on 16 April 1703, with the arrival of spring, Gillette closed her eyes for the last time. The next day, her funeral mass was attended by Pierre Fournier, Pierre Asselin and Father Hilaire, a Recollet. Thecurate Coeur-de-Roy presided at the funeral service. The ancestress had sowed life in the furrows of the island. The responsible woman of the first generation will live in the grateful memory of her descents. names listed as: Pierre Feuiltault et Gillette Savard. At Quebec, on Saturday, 16 January 1666, in the presence of Barbe de Boulogne, widow of the Governor Louis d'Ailleboust, chaperone of the girls sent by the king, and of Antoine Pepin dit Lachance, resident of the Ile d'Orléans, Pierre Filteau and Gillette Savard promised to live with community property, according to the "coutume de Paris". Also present was the notary Michel Fillion. The bride brought to the marriage some property valued at 100 livres, the dowry of a poor girl. On the following Monday, 22 February, the pastor Henri de Bernieres received the couple at the cathedral church of Quebec and gave them hisnuptial blessing, in the presence of witnesses Pierre Chauvin, husband of Marie Boileau, living on the Ile d'Orleans, and Claude Carpentier, bachelor servant at the Seminary. Where did one pour a little glass of eau-de-vie to celebrate the wedding? At the Pepin home on the island? Perhaps!
