About Giovanni Giulio

Houghton County Mine Inspectors Report

Accident 6. January 2. 1900.-John Jalio was killed by falling down No. 2 shaft at the Arcadian mine. An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

John Hanz testified as follows: "I am a timberman in No.2 shaft, Arcadian mine. I was working with the deceased last night at the 5th level taking down some hanging to make room for the skip to pass. We had cut off four planks in the 5th level for building a stage to stand on. John Jalio took the first plank and went to the shaft and went down the ladder 8 or 9 feet. As soon as he got to the shaft he fell down the shaft. I did not see how he got in whether he stepped in or not. I did not see him fall in, I just saw him going to the shaft. I first knew he fell in shortly after I saw him going towards the shaft with a plank with the intention of building a stage. The plank must have went in the shaft with him. He did not speak when he fell and I hollered down, 'there is a man gone in the shaft. Then I went down and found him on the 7th level. He was dead when found and I helped to take him to the surface."

John Uren testified: "I work as a timberman in the Arcadian mine. I was working in No. 2 shaft last night at the 7th level. We were eating our supper when we heard something coming down the shaft. We all ran from the shaft and went into the drift. Afterwards I went to the shaft and hollered to Mr. Henz and asked him what fell down the shaft. He said there is a man gone down the shaft and I looked down and saw the man just below us resting on a sleeper. Then we helped take him to the surface."

Charles Renaldi next testified: "I work at No. 2 shaft at the 7th level, Arcadian mine. I have nothing further to say than what has been said by the last witness."

Verdict of the jury: "We, the jury, upon our oaths do say that the said John Jalio came to his death on the 2nd day of January 1900, by accidentally falling down No. 2 shaft in the Arcadian mine."
