REPORT OF FATAL ACCIDENTS IN THE MINES OF HOUGHTON COUNTY .

FATAL ACCIDENT NO. 1 - October 14, 1907. - Joseph Agreebe, No. 3 Calumet.

Joseph Agreebe came to his death on this day by a fall of rock. An inquest was held over his body and the following testimonies taken.

Peter Tenatti: “I work for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. at No. 5 Calumet; was working at 51st level North last night, I was filling a car. Was working at the next mill from Agreebe (deceased). He was shoveling dirt in the mill I heard the rock drop but did not see it. I went to see if it fell on anyone and found him lying in the level. I do not know whether the ground was examined; we thought it was safe. We blasted a block hole about one half an hour before the accident happened. We did not examine the ground after blasting the block hole. The accident happened about half - past two this morning. I went to the hospital with Argeebe and he died about 25 minutes to four in the hospital while we were waiting for the doctor. I was working under the timber and Agreebe was working just outside, right in the level. It was timbered as far as they could go."

George Spehar: “I was working at the same level and with the same party as the other witnesses. I was working about four mills ahead of Agreebe. I was filling a car when I heard a rock drop and went to see if anyone was hurt. I helped take him out. The block hole was blasted in the same mill that the rock fell from.”

Verdict: "We, the jury, upon our oaths, do say that the said Joseph Agreebe came to his death on the 14th day of October, A. D., 1907, by the accidental falling of rock at the 51st level, No. 5 shaft, Calumet Branch of the C.&H. Mine."
