A-I-a GOERT (Goirt/Guert) (ROSA/ROOSA), born circa 1510-25.

There are a number of possibilities for the origin of this man's family. Perhaps the most often repeated is the legend that the forefathers of Geurt Aldertsz Rosa fled from the town Rosa located in the Kingdom of Spain in the eastern part of the north of the province of Catalonia, Ampurdium. The 18th century antiquarian, Gijsbert Ariens Rijckhuijsen, (#A-VI-a) himself a Rosa descendant, may have been the first to put this in writing and has often been quoted. What is often left out is that he himself did not seem to take much stock in the story, saying also that the name may originally have been Roos, a Dutch name known in the area. (Bruijn,de, Enny," Genealogie in Herwijnen", Gens Nostra, 1998, pp. 22-44.) The province of Ampurdium cannot be located on a modern map, however the town of Rosa, can be found on the Gulf of Rosas along the Mediterranean in the province of Gerona. It is in the northerly and easterly most province in Spain at the boarder of France. The district of Cataloni was part of ancient Aragon.

It seems well within the realm of possiblity that Goert could have been the descendant of one Jan Rosa who was the secretary of Holland, Zeeland and the western part of Friesland between 1428-1447. His "Memorialen Rosa" is often quoted as a source of genealogical data for certain families who lived in these provinces while Rosa was secretary there. Unfortunately these appear to contain no information on his own family and little has been learned about Jan Rosa himself. It has been determined that he did have at least one daughter, Rosina. [Thanks to Wim Selders]

Rosina Rosa married Cornelis Cornelisse Hasard(t). Originally the family was called 'du Hasart', a well known name of French refugees. However, Cornelis adopted the name of his wife's family.

In the 1948 issue of the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie's Yearbook, there was an article which gives the names of the city officials of Vlissingen, Zeeland. Cornelis Roose [presumably alias Hasardt/du Hasart] served as burgemeester in 1535. His son, Hendrick Cornelissen Roose held the same post in 1540, 1541, 1542, 1543, 1544, 1546, 1549, 1550, 1551 and 1555. A footnote appears at the bottom of the page which states that this family was known as Rosa outside of Vlissingen. (Woelderen, van, C. A., "Lijst van Baljuws, Burgemeesters, Schepenen, Raden, Pensionarissen, Secretarisen en Rentmeesters", Jaarboek, 1948, p.19.) Whether or not Jan Rosa or his son-in-law, Cornelis [Hasard(t)] Roose had another other children is an area that needs further research.

His son from an unknown woman:

1 GIJSBERT GOERTTZEN (Goirts/Geurts) (ROSA), born circa 1550-57 of Herwijnen, follows A-II-a.
