About Gonzalo de Santa Maria de Cartagena
Gonzalo de Santa María ( Burgos , 1379 - ibídem , 1448 ) was a Castilian clergyman, bishop of Gerona, Plasencia, Astorga and Sigüenza .
He was the son of Bishop Pablo de Santa María (former rabbi of Burgos, convert to Christianity and theologian), had before entering into religion, his legitimate wife, Juana.
He received the baptism in the Cathedral of Burgos with his father and several brothers on July 21, 1390 counting eleven years of age. Doctor of Laws at the University of Salamanca . His first ecclesiastical office was as Archdeacon of Briviesca . He was ambassador of the Aragonese King Alfonso V the Magnanimous in the Council of Constanza , where he represented Aragon in the conclave that elected Martin V as pope. This appointed him bishop of Gerona, but the king rejected such appointment (the diocese includes him in his list of bishops).
Surely this motivated the return of Gonzalo to Castile, where he would perform various episcopal offices, beginning with Astorga (1419-1423), Plasencia (1423-1446), and ending in Sigüenza (1446-1449), headquarters that he held when he died in Burgos, where he lived with his brother Alfonso de Cartagena , prelate of that city. As prelate of Plasencia and in the name of King Juan II of Castile he went to the Council of Basel in 1436.
He died in December 1448 in the city of Burgos . His body was buried in the main chapel of the former convent of San Pablo de Burgos , of the Order of the Dominicans , in which his father, Bishop Pablo de Santa María , and several of his relatives had been buried
