Pablo de Santa María or Paul of Burgos, born Solomon Ha-Levi (Spanish: Pablo de Santa María;Latin: Paulus Burgensis; 1350–1435) was a Roman Catholic theologian, bishop of Burgos, biblical commentator, and minister-keeper of the seal of the Council of Castile. Santa Maria was a converted Jewand prior to his baptism served as Rabbi of Burgos.

Shlomo Halevi was born into a family that was prominent in its financial activities at the royal court in Castile. In1389, he was sent to represent the Castilian court in Aquitaine, France. While there, he was taken hostage and imprisoned in London. As far as is known, he was Baptized on July 21, 1390, but this may not be the exact date; It is speculated that he was baptized, like many other Jews, following the KNA pogroms a year later. Along with him, his sons, daughter and brother also converted to Christianity. His wife Juana or Ioanna Benvenisti remained Jewish. In 1406, following a law allowing Jews to return to Judaism, their daughter Beatrice and their youngest son Todros returned to Judaism.[1] After his conversion to Christianity, he moved to Paris, where he studied theology.

In1394, he moved to Avignon, where he became close to Pope Boniface IX. At the same time, he also began to work vigorously to convert the rest of the Jews, and published polemical writings to prove the truth of Christianity. At the same time, he began to rise in the ranks of the teacher and was appointed to honorable positions. In1403, he was appointed Bishop of Cartagenaand. In1415, Bishop of his native Burgos. From1407onwards, he held the title of keeper-seal of the Castilian Privy Council.

His granddaughter, Teresa of Cartagena, born a Christian in 1425, was an educated Catholic nun as an adult, and one of the pioneers of feminist thought in the world.

His wife Ioanna, who refused to convert to Christianity with him and remained Jewish, is the protagonist of the book "The Rabbi's Wife: The Bishop's Wife" by David Jacobson and Hayuta Deutsch.

Great notes on names and on this notable Separdic scholar converted and whose name changed - there is a synagogue in Toledo Santa Maria La Blanca -
The name Santa Maria was used by members of the Ha-Levi family who migrated to New Galicia-and renamed themselves Santa Maria, then, "Santa Maria de Escobedo" - having to do with the "Secretario Escobedo" event--
then the name was "de Escobedo" - then it was just Escovedo or Escobedo.
Per book of Coahuila, Mexico, Chronicles.
