Gottfried Muntz

Most old chronicles have their beginning in the midst of tradition, and our family history is no exception to the general rule.

There was a tradition in the family that Gottfried Muntz had eleven brothers, most of whom emigrated from a place called Brent in Germany, to the English colonies in America, about the year 1700, where they probably amalgamated with the English and other settlers and nothing further is known of them to this writer.

Gottfried or Godfrey, however, remained in Germany and was married about the year 1695.

We find him established in the village of Hentenspach in the Amt. or Parish of Unter Weisach, Ober Amt (County) of Backnang the Dukedowm of Wurtenburg in the South of Germany, and from here we date our history as strictly true, for, although we have no written record of him, at least not in America, his granddaughter, the before mentioned Aunt Norduft, remembered him well, and told the writer of this; that he was a farmer and weaver, and when she was a young girl she assisted him in making spools for his work in the loom; that he lived to a good old age, and died in Hentenspach, but the date of his decease has been lost.
