28/05/1937 Vryheid Gazette Reports Prominent Resident of Scheepersnek Funeral of Mr GFW Herrmann

"Mr GFW Herrmann of 'Stolberg' who died at the age of 66 was buried on Sunday in the graveyard of the German Church at Scheepersnek. Mr Herrmann had a severe illness about a year ago and had been ailing ever since.

More than 200 people from Vryheid, Gluckstad, Piet Retief, Kambula, Schroeders and Lilienthal attended the funeral as well as almost all the local community. The Rev. R Drews conducted the service.

Mr Herrmann was a well read man and interesting to talk to. He was born in Germany in 1870 and came out here in 1891 and worked at his trade as a blacksmith first at New Hanover, at Escourt and at Luneburg. In 1894 he went to Ermelo and to Johannesburg. In 1895 he started a business of his own at Tabankulu, Vryheid district, moved to Denny Dalton at the time when the mine was doing well, and later to Gluckstad.

In September 1899 he went on commando and was at the Talsna fight. In 1901 he was captured in the Vryheid district. Subsequently he went to work at Harburg and there met and married Miss E. Fortmann in 1904. In 1914 he bought the farm 'Stolberg' here, and again took up his trade as a blacksmith. Mrs Herrmann who helped him on the farm survives as well as six children. They are Friedrich, Hartwig, Walter, Mrs Weber, Ewalt and Willie. There are also five grandchildren.

Mr Herrmann was a member of the local farmers association and was its president at one time. He was also vise-president and a member of the executive committee and was a regular attendant at the associations meetings as long as his health allowed. He took a lead part in the affairs of the local German church.

The farmers association sent a wreath and others were sent by: His loving wife, Ewalt and Willie; Friedrich, Frieda and family; Harwig, Winnie and family and Mrs Panther; Ludwig; Walter and Marie; Helena and Gustav and family; Mr and Mrs Hohls and family; Mr and Mrs G Fortmann; Mr and Mrs von Varendorff; Mr W Fortmann; Eddie and Natalie Meyer; Dr and Mrs Wittmann; Mr and Mrs E Muhl."
