A.B. Safford, son of Maj. Joseph Warren Safford and Diantha Little of Crete, Will, IL and grandson of Rev. War soldier and settler of Cambridge, VT, Ens. David Safford (1744-1831). At the age of 12, A.B. Safford, in 1836 with his family settled in Illinois. On 3 Apr 1845, he married in Watertown, NY, Julia J. Massey, daughter of Hart Massey, Esq. of Watertown.

He secondly married Anna Elizabeth Candee (1832-1921) who is buried here with her brother, Henry H. Candee of Cairo, IL, children of Stephen Hinsdale Candee of Cairo, IL. In Cairo, A B Safford was a leading banker and for which the AB Safford Memorial Library was named. He had no children and died suddenly of apoplexy while in Burlington, VT.  

He was the older brother of Anson P. K Safford, third governor of Arizona and Dr. Mary Jane Safford, the "Angel of Cairo" from the Civil War. AB Safford was widely known throughout this State through his identification with business interests, and was universally beloved for his sterling social qualities.
