About Governor Francisco Manuel Manuel de Lando, Lieutenant General, Governor

14th Governor of Puerto Rico, 1530 - 1536 Francisco Manuel de Lando Biography Lando, Francisco Manuel de . Spain, ú. ts XV - Puerto Rico, 1536. Lieutenant governor of the island of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

He arrived in Puerto Rico very early. In fact, in 1517, being a neighbor of Puerto Rico, the Hieronymites entrusted the chief María de Baguamamey, who had previously been taken from Admiral Diego Colón.

When, in 1529, he was appointed lieutenant governor of Puerto Rico, he was an old connoisseur of the situation on the island, where he had resided for more than a decade. His appointment took place to fill the vacancy left by the late Pedro Moreno who had held the position between 1521 and 1529.

He had to live a very delicate time, due to the depopulation of the island and the continuous indigenous uprisings.

The first thing he was asked to do was write a report on the situation on the small Caribbean island.

He is responsible for the completion of a detailed census of settlers, in 1530, which included Spaniards, blacks and Indians. For the rest, the panorama that he described was bleak, when he affirmed that the most important population center, Puerto Rico, barely lived around 120 married neighbors. In successive letters, he described the danger posed by an eventual indigenous uprising, given the small Spanish population that lived on the island.

In 1536 he died in office, being replaced by Vasco de Tiedra.
