Lewis Morris (15 October 1671 – 21 May 1746), chief justice of New York and British governor of New Jersey, was the first lord of the manor of Morrisania in New York (in what is now the Bronx).
Born on tthe estate of his parents Richard and Sarah, this Lewis was the first in a lengthy string of men with the same name to inherit the Estate of Morrisania in the southwest section of tday's Bronx.His parents moved their estate from Barbados to the Bronx when they bought the land in 1670. In the fall of 72 his parents died. His uncle Lewis left the Barbados to raise him and run the Estate. When the childless unlce colonel Lewis and his wife Mary died the fully grown Lewis in herited the estate in 1691.
Lewis was appointed acting governor of New YOrk in 1731. In 1738, petitioned the Crown for for a distinct administration from New York and Lewis servedas Governor of New Jersey until his death.
He is the grandfather of Lewis Morris (1726 -1795) who signed the Declaration of Independence.
