He was a Merchant & Farmer, he moved to Arkansas in 1826 He became Auditor for the Arkansas Territory, and served in that position from 1829-1831. He served as a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives in 1836, and in the Arkansas Senate 1840-1848
He had a unsuccessful gubernatorial run in 1844 When Governor Thomas Stevenson Drew resigned from office on Jan 10 1849, He was President of the Senate, and became acting Governor. He left the office on April 19 1849, and returned to his mercantile store in Jefferson Co AR.
He died at his home in Jefferson County after a lengthy illness. He was a Democrat
