A house was built on Belle Plain by Gowry Waugh (1734-1783), nephew of Joseph and grandson of Parson John Waugh.
Gowry seems to have accumulated the most wealth of any of the Waughs. The Stafford county rent Roll of 1776 list him as holding 1,570 acres of land. In 1783, the year in which he died he paid taxes on 39 slaves, 19 horses, and 57 cattle, indicating that he was quite wealthy.
