About Grace Lye
Grace was possibly the daughter of John & Luce Rodd of Portland, Dorset;[1] however, this is unconfirmed as no parents are recorded on her death certificate and no parents are mentioned in her obituary.
She married John Lye on the 19th April 1813[2] and had 11 children all born at Martock.
Grace departed Plymouth with her husband and 8 children bound for New Zealand on the William Bryan 19 Nov. 1840, arriving at New Plymouth on 31 March 1841.
She died on the 24th January 1874, at New Plymouth, aged 87 years.[3][4][5]
Obituary
Death of Mrs. John Lye. — One by one the pioneer settlers of this Province are passing away. Of late we regret to say that we have had to notice many of their deaths, and now our obituary contains another. Mrs. Lye, with her husband and family, were passengers by the first ship that came to this settlement, the ' William Bryant,' which arrived here in 1841. This venerable lady has raised a large family, and has lived to see her grandchildren's children. She was known to all our old settlers by whom she was much regarded. She died on Saturday evening and yesterday a large number of persons followed her remains to the grave.[6]
Grace and her husband were buried in St. Mary's Churchyard, New Plymouth.[7]
