About Grgo Clemo Franičević
by his grandaughter Anita.2012 My grandfather came to NZ 0n 22nd or 26th September 1926 (the passport printing is not clear) and worked in Kauri gum in the Bay of Islands. His father had moved to Christchurch and we believe he went there to see him. I'm not actually sure how he met my grandmother, but I'm assuming it was while he was in the area. My mum told me that he used to have a commercial cleaning business. He separated from my grandmother and lived in Stanmore Rd, Christchurch, for many years. Mum told me that Grandad was a very gentle and lovely man and that he helped other "Yugoslav Immigrants" when they arrived in Christchurch. His father Vicko remarried and remained in Christchurch also. Vicko did not have any more children in this marriage though and the family did not know Vicko or his Christchurch wife. The only memories I have are visiting Grandad at Stanmore Rd. Grandad was very keen on gardening. My mum told me how her and dad (Margaret and Edward Franicevic) lived with Grgo for approximately 1 year early in their relationship. Grgo apparently loved my sister, Lisa's, very thick, curly hair and always patted her on the head. Grgo was cremated and his ashes were sprinkled by air over the Bay of Islands by his family as requested by him.
