GEDCOM Note

Parents

By patronymics Grietje Jacobs father will be Jacob somebody, NOT Rutger Jacobsen. The Dutch didn't take surnames until the English forced them to - 1664 - long after Grietje was born.

Audrey Van Leuven's book about Osterhout, Schut, Jelles and Jacobs, says that she has been unable to find anything about Grietje before her marriage to Willem. She thinks Heyltje and Willemtie Jacobs were her sisters, and that maybe their mother's name is Magdalena. There were other Jacobs families living in New York during these years but no connection to Grietje.

Life Sketch

The three women were previously tied to Rutger Jacobsz and Trijntje Jans van Breestede as parents, but they cannot be due to patronymics and ages. It is not known who their parents were. It is believed that Heyltje and Willemtje were sisters, and based on baptism records that Grietje was also their sister.
