About Gross Franklin Scruggs
Gross Franklin Scruggs
From Scruggs Genealogy by Ethel Hastings Scruggs Dunklin:
Gross Franklin Scruggs, fourth son of William Scruggs and Elizabeth Buford was born in Scott County, KY November 22, 1808.
After his marriage to Anne 'Nancy' M. Briscoe, he moved from Scott County, KY to Owen County, then to Gallatin County, thence to Grant County, leaving Kentucky for Clinton County, Missouri in 1856 and later to Sunflower County Mississippi.
He finally settled with his family and those slaves who remained with him, on a large plantation called 'Forest Home' near Huntsville, Walker County, Texas where he became a prominent planter, universally esteemed by his neighbors as a man of unquestioned integrity, courage, and honor.
Gross Franklin Scruggs, before leaving Kentucky, sold the 'Old Scruggs Place' retaining that part of the plantation known as the family burying ground. After the death of his wife, Nancy, in Walker County, Texas in February 1867, he went to Dallas, where he died at the home of his son, James Briscoe on January 8, 1897.
