Carol

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Guilford Bass, son of Jacob and Ann (Cook) Bass Jr, was born in 1794 and

died 20 September 1846. Guilford Bass married Mary Proctor in Sumner

County, Tennessee in 1820. Guilford Bass served in the War of 1812 in the

3rd Regiment detached from the 5th Brigade under Lt. Col. Commandant

Jeremiah Slade, 1st Major James J. Hill and 2nd Major Andrew Joyner. The

copy of the "Muster Rolls of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 Detached From

The Militia of North Carolina in 1812 and 1814" may be found in the Evans

Public Library in Vandalia, Fayette County, Il. The following history is

taken from the "Past & Present of Montgomery County, Illinois" by Jacob

Traylor pages 521-522. It states that Guilford Bass arrived in Fayette

County, Il in the fall of 1827 and secured land from the government. It

states he secured 40 acres and took up farming, but had learned the trade

of a cooper early in life. It states he is buried on the old Bass

Homestead in Ramsey township, Section 27, township 08N, Meridian 3,

Section SESE, Range 01E. The 40 acres is now owned by a Mr. William

Greenwood and Mr & Mrs. Sam Messina. As of January 27, 1999, the

whereabouts of Guilford's grave is unknown. Mrs. Messina told me a story

about a few graves near where she lives being pulled up as a joke and were

thrown down a well many years ago. I sure hope that it wasn't Guilford's

stone that met this fate. Guilford Bass's wife Mary is buried in Tennessee

Cemetery in Oconee, Il and is in beautiful shape. It reads "Mary wife of

G. Bass died March 5, 1872 aged 72 years". Guilford Bass's will is on file

in Vandalia, Il dated 1846 and his son Jacob was named executor and

Guardian of his minor children. Guilford and Mary (Proctor) Bass were

parents of twelve children, ten sons and two daughters as follows: John

Jacob William James W. David Henry Guilford Elijah Frances Josiah Mary

died when 13 buried on old Bass homestead Martha died when 8 also buried

on old Bass homestead

I am a direct decedent from Guilford Bass. And have been working on the Bass family genealogy for over 30 years. I have considerable evidence that there were mulattos in the Guilford Bass line; however, I consider myself white. I have done the DNA testing and find that I am an A Haplotype that descends from the San tribe of South African Pigmies and our line left Africa between 1000 and 1500 years ago, it is the oldest Haplotype on the face of the earth and is one of the rarest. We go back to the original Adam. It is generally accepted that in Virginia families that go back prior to the Revolutionary War had a high probability of possessing White, Black and Indian blood. We have ancestors from the both the Nansemond and Chowan tribes. Somewhere around 1714 in early Virginia if you were dark you needed to carry a document that you were Indian not black. Our family carried those documents. Guilford’s grandfather, Jacob, Senior owned large tracts of land (I have copies of his will) that were around 1000 acres and located on the old Chowan Indian tribal lands near Bertie County Va. They had both slaves and indentured servants working the land. I am not sure how the black line came to the Americas – it could have been from Nathaniel (The Ship’s Captain), through the Indians, perhaps even via the Melungeons or the lost colony. I have spent years chasing this question and think we need to do a lot more DNA testing to help zero in on the source. I have discovered four other families with our exact blood type but with different names. They all seem to originate from Bertie County, VA. The more we discover the more we find we do not know.
